I really have a difficult time understanding how people pledge just to be active during college. And so many people blame it on the dues but I am CERTAIN that if you show up to a community service event at a graduate level, no one is going to say, "You can't serve at the soup kitchen because you didn't pay your dues." They might talk about you but I hope you didn't make it out of your process with thin skin.
Sad thing is, people don't even try to be active these days. And yes, I am judging. I understand if you are just getting out of school and are working 2 or 3 jobs and can't make any events. But for those of us who have one job and time to relax, why not use that leisure time to mentor a young person? You don't have to do it in the name of Kappa or Zeta or whomever but it needs to be done. Our community needs those of us with the work ethic that so many of our Deans, ADPs, and other big brothers/big sisters tried to instill in us. Being an Alpha is not so much about knowing you're the best at everything. Being a Delta isn't about always promoting the image of an independent woman. Sometimes you really just have to let down the exterior and do what we were all intended to do - serve. And if you can't do that, take your letters off.
Yes, resources are needed to serve the community but if you don't have the resources and you don't give the community the one thing you have of value to the organization (that being your time), you are a piss poor representation of _____ _____ ______ Fraternity/Sorority (, Incorporated). And this goes to everyone from my line brothers to the last Iota to cross during Fall 2011. DO BETTER!
