Please Be Thankful

"Thank God for granting me this moment of clarity. This moment of honesty" -- Jay-Z

Sometimes I just want to know something for sure. Something other than the fact that I'm going to be successful. I want a sense of stability in life and I just don't have it. I want normal for more than 2 months at a time. But it doesn't happen. That's why I have to be successful. If I'm not, my kids will be wishing they had normal and I can't deal with that.

I really want to be able to complain about stuff like Christmas gifts that I didn't get and the fact that my parents are getting on my nerves for asking me to come home so much. But I can't. So I complain about the stuff that matters like not seeing my little cousins for Christmas or not going to church on Sunday. So often people get caught up in the unimportant things but are you really thinking about what you do have? Probably a lot more than other people.

This isn't a pity post. Were it one, I would have gone beneath the surface. This is a post saying please realize that things could be much worse. Life is good. Even a bad day of life is still a day of life which is blessing. And tomorrow will come. Make the best of your tomorrow if today isn't what you want it to be.

I Get Up

I aint trynna survive
Im trynna throw my momma in rides
Imma provide for my seed I'm the soil
--J. Cole

I haven't written in a while but I'm writing today. I really just want to update everyone on my blessings. I'm 21 hours from graduating. Crazy, right?! You really have no idea where I'm coming from but to give you an idea, I've been without a home address, not known where I was going to stay at night, lost my great grandma to age, lost my cousin to gang violence, lost friends to death and to life, began relationships, ended relationships, lost love, found love, questioned God, found spirituality, gave my blood, sweat, and tears for 6 brothers, lost my scholarships, regained them, and everything else all within these 4 years. The fact that I even made it to college is a blessing because so many of the cats I grew up with are still at home, dead, or in jail (no disrespect. Still got nothing but love). So, nope, I'm not getting out on time, but I am so thankful that I'm getting out. My father and his father went to college and never made it out. I am going to walk across that stage with my head held high because I will not be another statistic. I really am so ready to make this world better. And I'm going to do just that. Thanks to all you who have ever supported me and those of you who continue to support me. I love life.

Even on my Worst Days...

Usually I write to air out a grievance but today, I 'm just going to write in a spirit of thanksgiving. Even with all the flaws in the world, more specifically in this nation, I am unbelievably blessed. So often we focus so much on the negative things that we don't appreciate the good things.

Example 1: I have food and usually if I don't eat three meals each day it is because I don't "want" to eat something. That is so spoiled of me. How often do our families have leftovers in the fridge that end up getting thrown away? Tell that to a child in an under-developed nation and he really might smack you.

Example 2: I have more clothes than 3/4 of the people in my house combined. This is just b/c I really enjoy being able to change styles, but it is no where near a necessity. I am thankful for my wardrobe but even as recently as 100 years ago, people in America had three sets of clothes - work clothes, relaxing clothes, and Sunday clothes. Now I catch myself shopping for new outfits for most major parties. And why? Just b/c I want to.

Example 3: I can afford to kick back and relax. I might not be living as comfortably as I would like to this summer but I am living. My bills are getting paid (barely and always at the last minute). I wish I was working but I'm just going to tough it out through this dry spell. And when it passes, I'll be even more thankful.I don't want to dwell on my blessings b/c I could go on all day.

But anyway, just wanted to focus on the good things in life. The world might be bad, but life is good. Have a great day.
