If Troy Davis Dies Tonight

The struggle of the masses
Is not race but class is
The truest issue facing those under God
Race is surface level... a facade
They blind us so we don't examine the true problems
Because then we would definitely be able to solve them
I can't and I won't act like race isn't a factor
But in comparison to wealth, race just doesn't matter
See, if I can pay for a good defense, I can pull an OJ
And if I can't, I'll be sitting where Troy Dave
Is, awaiting an execution with no foreseeable solution
But all this mental pollution
Has us thinking it's really about the color of his skin
When it's really about the skin that holds his money
Is it pleather or cowhide... This is so sad yet so funny.
From cow tail whips in Africa to cowhide leather that makes wallets to buy whips
Either way, if you're rich, the taste of death won't touch your lips
You cannot say that I am naive. No, I've thought this through
Race is an issue, but money is too
No, money is one and race is two
So if you're a rich black man, you're doing better than a slew
Of whites whose grandparents slaughtered our people
Because now, money, not race, is what makes you regal
Funny thing is, the love of money is the root of evil
So to wear a crown you must rock with d'evils
Social d-evols... Social devolution
And that is where I come to my conclusion
The white man is not the devil. Sorry to those who believe it
The rich man who lets money replace love, though you can't see it,
He is the devil... or at least a demon in service
So, ask yourself, when you make love to your money with your time, was it worth it?

I Want Some Ice Cream

"Money can't buy happiness but it's a damn good down payment." -- Fabolous

One day I want to know what it is like to live comfortably. I want to have all financial burdens removed and really enjoy my life. I'm not afraid to work to get there, but I want to go a nice period of my life in which my family and I are able to enjoy the fruits of my labor (and my wife's if she chooses to work after we get settled).

I want to be able to leave the state for a vacation with my wife and kids. I want to get the kids nice birthday gifts and throw them birthday parties. I want a good job that I enjoy but don't have to kill myself doing. I want to have great credit and enough money in savings that my kids won't have to worry about rushing through school so that they won't have to tack on an extra year of college loans. I want to take my wife on a date in a different state at least once a month and a different country twice a year.

I want all of this because I just don't see it as my reality. I have never stepped foot on foreign soil. My family hasn't vacationed together since I was in 6th or 7th grade. My mom was talking to me yesterday about picking up a second job for the holidays just so she could make ends meet when Christmas comes around. I refuse to do it. I can't be broke. I will work at McDonald's as a cashier before I am broke.

Yes, I put a lot of emphasis on money but if you never had ice cream but watched people smile as they ate it around you, you'd wonder what it tasted like. Same thing.

I have to be different. It's that simple. I want too much not to be.

Financial Irresponsibility

Just read a story on CNN.com that was talking about how 7,900,000 jobs are likely gone for good. Then I thought about the fact that we're in a recession. Then I thought about how much money Americans spend. We are in a recession, but there were mad parents at the optional $70+ SOAR when they could be holding on to that cash. I have numerous friends who have taken Spring Break and summer vacations over these past few months. I just spent $188 on a round trip ticket to Manhattan. We have Blackberrys and Iphones that we get for "free" or at a "reduced" price but we end up buying 8 of them in the duration of our contracts ($100+/month). Gentlemen still out go out to the bar, buying themselves and random women drinks... In 1935, I can bet that cats weren't offering ladies a glass of water, much less an amaretto sour.

Just think about it; How many fresh pairs of kicks do you have? When your friend shoots you a text about a crazy sale, do you buy the quantity of a retail priced shirt and then talk about how much you saved? Do you cook for yourself or order in all the time? We are too arrogant to be in a real recession. In the great depression, people were bragging on things that had little value. We are sitting here bragging on stuff that actually costs a good chunk of change. We really need to reconsider our financial habits. Otherwise, we really won't have anything. Food for thought.
